Improve Your Shooting Skills: How to Shoot a Pistol

There are a few different aspects of shooting that all work together to help you hit your target. If one of these variables is wrong, it can mess up your entire shooting technique. As a result, you’ll need to get proficient with each part of pistol shooting basics. Here are a few of the most important factors.

Don’t Flinch

This is probably one of the biggest problems that new shooters face. When you fire a gun, there’s a controlled explosion that sends a projectile hundreds of feet away. That explosion is loud and naturally, it’s startling.

But that’s a reaction that you need to overcome to progress your shooting skills. Anticipating recoil and flinching will make you shoot low left every time. Don’t panic though – there’s a way to fix this. Pick up some snap caps and put them at random into your gun’s magazine. If you’re anticipating the recoil, you’ll notice it as soon as you hit the snap cap. Then, you can start fixing this error.

Don’t Forget the Front Sight

This is especially true with new shooters. Often, those unfamiliar with firearms will lock their eyes on their target, totally forgetting about their sights. If you don’t align your front and back sights, you’re not going to be hitting anything. Your sights need to match up in order for your gun to shoot straight, and if they don’t your accuracy will decrease as the range to your target increases.

Control Recoil

Shooting a single accurate shot is one thing. But being able to follow it up with additional, precise fire is another. Being able to perform accurate follow up shots is a critical part of shooting. No matter how good of a shot you are, chances are you’re going to need more than one bullet if your life is in danger.

Use the Right Grip

Another common problem with newer shooters is “limp wristing.” This means not giving enough support to the firearm. In the worst cases, this can lead to the gun cycling improperly and jamming. Make sure you hold your gun high and tight.

Learning these tips will definitely help you improve your accuracy and overall shooting abilities. But that won’t mean anything if you don’t have your gun with you in the first place. That’s where getting the right holster becomes critical. Fortunately, it’s also where the Southern Trapper can help. With a holster made from sturdy alligator leather, your gun can go wherever you do. Want to learn more? You can check out our entire inventory of leather holsters here.
